(1768- 1830)

Farm Labourer of Leadenham, Linc.

Version 2.0 December 2, 2002

Foreword

This document provides a generation-by-generation report on the descendants of John Theaker (1768 – 1830) of Leadenham, Lincolnshire, U.K. It is by no means complete and there are undoubtedly some errors, but I am quite confident that all the relationships are reasonable and the errors are minor.

This is the second version of this report and contains much more information than Version 1 dated October 10, 2000. Many new people have been found, and I have tried to collect as much census information as I could, including a fairly thorough search of the 1881 and 1901 UK census’s.

I have tried to be careful to not include any information on living people other than names and relationships. If I have failed anywhere on this, I sincerely apologize.

I would like to thank the many people who have contributed information to this document. Without you, this would have been impossible. Because of you, we have a document that I hope people of our extended Theaker family will find interesting and useful. When John Theaker and Jane Puttergill married in 1792, I wonder if they realized what they were about to cause. It is now 210 years and nine generations later, with enough descendants to populate a small town much bigger than Leadenham. They did well!

This document was created from the Legacy Release 3.0 Family Tree Standard Edition, where I keep all my genealogy data. Please contact me if you find any errors or missing information. I will recreate this document periodically as new information is found.

Sincerely

Eric N. Gelling (egelling@shaw.ca)

Notes: The number that appears after a person’s name is the Record Identification Number (RIN) from the originating database. Similarly, the number after a marriage is the Marriage Record Identification Number (MRIN). These keys have been included because they are useful for connecting to other reports.

The number that appears in front of the person’s name is a chronological number assigned by the Legacy program as this report was generated. It shows that there are nearly 600 descendants recorded here. The plus sign "+" in front of the number indicates that there is at least one more generation associated with this individual, and the details can be found in the next generation.

General Notes: Mag was my grandmother. "Granny Gelling" had a strong sense of humour and laughed easily. She enjoyed watching ice hockey, and was the first person in our family to get a colour TV, so she could watch the Stanley Cup finals. Also enjoyed scrabble and jigsaw puzzles, and loved her garden. One of my great memories was watching the moon landing in 1969 with her (she had the colour TV!) and listening to her talk about her memories of the Wright Brothers first flight in 1903. She started to travel in her 80s, after my grandfather died, with several trips to California and Hawaii with her son Harold. She maintained her house on Heron Street in Victoria and died there aged 90. My grandparents built this house in 1938.

Granny was well to the end, and died suddenly of an aneurism while eating breakfast. She was quite tall, and was much taller than her husband Will.

They had 4 children: Jack (John Michael 1905-1979), Bill (William Charles 1907-1986), Harold (Harold Lawson 1914-1990) and Peggy (Margaret Beatrice 1916-1992). Despite these difficulties, he did very well for himself and became a successful Grocer. He moved his family to Victoria BC in 1910 when he was 31. He started Gelling's Grocery on Oak Bay Avenue in Victoria about 1920 and ran it until his retirement in 1954.

Grand-Dad was a very small man, about 5' 2". He was a strict teetotaller, largely because of his father's problems. I remember him as being very kindly and generous, always giving a cookie or two to his young grandson at his store. The family remembers him as being a terrible driver, who often got stuck in the mud using shortcuts when delivering groceries in his old Ford Truck.

He was very active in his church, St. Mary's Anglican Church on Elgin Road. He loved music.

He retired about 1965 and died in 1979 at the age of 73.

284. William Charles (Bill) GELLING-[5] was born on 21 Oct 1907 in Liscard, Birkenhead, Chs and died on 20 Feb 1986 in Victoria, BC.

General Notes: "Bill" was my father. He came to Canada at age 2, and attended school in Victoria where he lived all his life. He worked as a printer in the early days and then became an accountant for the Royal Jubilee Hospital. He joined the Canadian Army in 1942, received his training in Halifax, and spent most of the war in Alaska. He retired as a Major. Always interested in politics and public service, he was on the Victoria School Board for several years, including being chairman for two years. He also ran for the BC legislature and at least once for Canadian legislature during the Diefenbaker days, but was not successful.

Dad became a Community Development Officer in 1966 and lived with the Tsimpsian First Nations people in Port Simpson (north of Prince Rupert, BC) for three years. Though this meant he was away most of the time, it was one of the most rewarding periods of time for him.

In his younger days, Dad was a good athlete. He played semi-professional baseball, hockey, and tennis. He was the person who cleaned the ice between periods (known as a "rink rat") in 1924 when the Victoria Cougars won the Stanley Cup. He met my mother, I believe, about 1926 and they played tennis together for many years. They married in 1933 and had three boys. I am the youngest.

Dad was quiet and mild-mannered, but always enjoyed having fun. He loved sports of all kinds. He was very bright and interested in all things, and his biggest regret was that he never finished high school so couldn't go to university. (That value held through to his three children, and he actively and successfully encouraged each of us in our education pursuits). Though not trained in carpentry, he build his own house which became the family home in 1948. He was a man of many hobbies: geology, photography, painting (not one of his best talents!). He also loved and longed to travel, and his driving trips were known to always go down every road. "There's a road here; we have to drive to the very end to see what's there".

Dad became a stroke victim by the time he was in his late 60s. His children sponsored our parents on a few trips while he was still well enough to travel (England, Tahiti, Hawaii, California, and then latterly little day trips nearby). However, his last years were hard for him as he became less able to speak and enjoy an active life. He died in 1986 in the Fairfield Extended-Care Hospital, age 78.

She was very social, very popular and beautiful, the "belle of the ball". She married Tommy Stevenson in 1938 when she was 22, and they had 2 children. During the war she lived in Victoria while Tommy was overseas. In the late 1940s, they moved to Cranbrook BC where Tommy worked for the Provincial Government as a land assayer. About 1954, they moved to Penticton, and about 1975 retired to nearly Naramata on Okanagan Lake. Peggy loved sports and was an excellent golfer. She was always cheerful and fun, and an enthusiastic fan of everything her family or friends undertook. We were all sad when she took ill in 1991 with pancreatic cancer and died in 1992 at age 76.
